Fibromyalgia Causes Symptoms and Treatment

Fibromyalgia Causes Symptoms and Treatment

Fibromyalgia is a complicated chronic disorder characterized by a widespread feeling of pain throughout the body. Pain is one of the many symptoms and can be felt especially when pressure is applied to specific areas of the body called tender points. Scientists believe that the nerve stimuli causing this pain is found in the tissues and hence, the heightened levels of pain felt during movement.

Early in the 19th century before a proper diagnosis of this disorder was drawn, patients were diagnosed with Rheumatism, which is a disease with similar symptoms as Fibromyalgia. Back then a lot of words such ‘Fibrositis’ were used as a term referring to soft tissue Rheumatism. It was not until 1976 when the word ‘Fibromyalgia’ was used by Dr. P.K Hench as a term that described the exact symptoms for the Fibromyalgia disorder.

Up until this day, the exact cause of Fibromyalgia is not known. Through studies, certain conclusions have been drawn, and several probable causes of the disorder have been identified.

Some of these causes include:

•    Genetic – It is believed that Fibromyalgia is spread through genes; meaning there is a risk of a child contracting this disorder if it has been experienced before in the family.

•    Lifestyle – Factors such as stress are believed to be some of the things that could cause Fibromyalgia. Bad lifestyle habits such as smoking and lack of exercise are also seen as other contributing factors leading to this disorder.

•    Sleep Disturbances – Researchers claim disruption of sleep at stage IV of the normal human sleeping cycle brought similar effects to the muscles of certain subjects. This muscle degeneration could contribute to the development of the disorder.

•    Psychological Factors – There is significant evidence linking depression to Fibromyalgia with treatments to diseases such Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) being similar to Fibromyalgia.

•    Gender – This disorder has been found to be more prevalent in men than in women.

•    Age – The highest number of people that tested positive for this condition fall between 20 to 50 years.

•    Related diseases – Other related disorders are known to affect muscles, joints, and bones such Rheumatism. People that have been found with these related diseases are more likely to contract Fibromyalgia as well.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia usually range in severity and individuals, these indications are more severe than in others. Not to mention, the amount of pain goes up and down in an individual from time to time.

The symptoms include:

•    Fatigue/Sleep disturbances (waking up unrefreshed)

•    Pain – Pain is felt mainly in the tissues, joints, and muscles and spreads throughout the body. When pressure is applied to specific places in the body called tender points, extreme pain is felt.

•    Cognitive difficulties (memory difficulties or thinking clearly) – This symptom may be characterized by lack of concentration and also memory problems. It is also known as Fibrofog and persons with this symptom may also experience difficulties with speech. Fibrofog may also be accompanied by other related complications such as depression, anxiety, migraines, and tension headaches.

•    Sleeping problems – People with this disorder usually experience intermittent sleeping patterns and are not able to get a good night sleep.

•    Pelvic pain.

•    Irritable or overactive bladder.

•    Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), TMJD and gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD)

While this condition poses a lot of risk to your overall health, it can also be managed. Most doctors recommend pain relievers alongside other medication, but you can also use exercises such as Yoga to get your body back to optimum health. Aside from yoga, physical therapy and acupuncture are also known to have positive effects in combating Fibromyalgia.
