Kenyatta University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the suburban setting of the large city of Nairobi. It is located about twenty three kilometers from The Nairobi Central Business District on the Nairobi-Thika Highway. In 1965, barely three years after Kenya was granted independence by The British Colonial Masters, the Templer Barracks was handed over to the Kenyan Government by the British. The barracks were converted into a mid-level institution known as Kenyatta College, which had two sections: The Secondary Education Division and The Division for Teacher Education. The Secondary Division was from Form one to Form Four which were removed in 1969 to pave way for Advanced Level classes. The first of its own students were admitted in 1972 to undertake a Bachelor of Education Degree. They were two hundred in number. As a result of these swift developments in The Kenyatta University College, certificate courses were wiped out to pave way for undergraduate diplomas. In August 23, 1985,the presidential assent was made and the institution was made a full-fledged University. The act started being operational in September 1, 1985 and inauguration later followed in December 17,1985.
