What are some Interesting Facts about Tanzania

The United Republic of Tanzania, popularly known as Tanzania, is the largest country in East Africa. It has a population of 47,173,000 and a variety of cities with one of them (Dodoma) as the capital. The official languages are Swahili and English, with the former more familiar with most of the public. Tanzania is also home to two islands, namely Mafia and Zanzibar, and is bordered by eight countries. These countries are Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia.

Tanzania is also home to the tallest mountain in Africa called Mount Kilimanjaro as well as three of the biggest lakes in the continent. These lakes, Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Nysa are a significant tourist attraction for the country. As far as the people and the culture go to Tanzania, there are roughly 120 ethnic groups with Sukuma as the largest. They live in the north-western part of the country. The first inhabitants in Tanzania were hunters and gatherers, but the Arabian and Persian migration in 800AD changed the country’s direction to date.

Swahili, the dominant language in Tanzania, was coined from Arab and Bantu languages. The former might have been dominant a few years back, but Africans occupy modern-day Tanzania. Here are some interesting facts about one of the most beautiful countries in Africa.

  • Wildlife has always been a major tourist attraction

East Africa is blessed to have so many animal species within its borders, and Tanzania is home to most of these animals. The country has giraffes, lions, rhinos, leopards, zebra, elephants, crocodiles, hippos, turtles, and wildebeest, to mention a few. Thousands of tourists visit the country every year to witness the famous wildebeest migration. Just like Uganda, Tanzania also has a lot of protected national parks and game reserves to help contain and monitor wild game after poaching made some animal species endangered over the years.

Consider this; 30% of the entire country is national parks; those are a lot of animals.

  • Watching the big five on a crater

You can watch the big five while enjoying a cold beverage on the Ngorongoro Crater in the Northern area of the country. The crater came about after a volcanic explosion and is one of the most serene destinations to visit in Tanzania. It also has its own ecosystem and hosts the largest known population of lions. The area also has gazelle, cheetah, and ostriches.

  • The food is amazing

Have you ever sampled wild game before, ostrich, warthog, maybe some antelope? Well, Tanzania is the perfect place to enjoy such delicacies. Apart from wild game, Tanzania is also famed for its delicious local foods such as samosas, biriyani, ndizi-nyama, pilau/pilaf, and flavored fish. Their traditional recipes are some of the best in African and the globe at large.

  • 1,000 years of history is retained in trees

The baobab tree is among some of the fascinating trees on the globe, seeing it can live to be 1,000 years old. Tanzania has a lot of these trees, especially in the Tarangire National Park. Some species of Baobab can even live to 6,000 years such as the one in South Africa, which is believed to be the oldest.

  • Lions climb trees here

The national park mentioned above has some even more fascinating things to watch, such as tree-climbing lions. Baobabs are thick and can be easy to climb unlike most trees, and they provide a haven for the lions that leave the ground to escape tsetse fly attacks. They also climb the trees in search of a breeze in times when the ground is unbearably hot.

If not for the five interesting facts named above, be sure to visit this wonderful country and witness some of the best hospitality. Tanzania also has some of the best beaches and offers the perfect environment for a coastal vacation.
