More About Kazuri Beads Kenya

Kazuri's hand-painted fair trade ceramic jewellery made in Kenya. Every bead which makes up a necklace or bracelet is shaped by hand by one of the 300 local women employed by Kazuri. A Kazuri piece is more than an item of jewellery, it's a piece of Kenya.

We also have a special selection of hand picked fair trade gifts, accessories and homeware. This includes Lombok pottery from Thailand, beautiful handloomed scarves from Nepal and many other items from around the world.

Kazuri, which means "small and beautiful" in Swahili, began in 1975 as a tiny workshop experimenting on making ceramic beads made by hand.

The clay, which comes from Mount Kenya, is processed on-site, and there's a short tour of the workshop where around 340 women, most of them single mothers, produce the merchandise that's sold in shops throughout Kenya and in international markets.

The factory is located in what used to be part of the Karen Blixen Estate (of the Academy Award winning film "Out of Africa") fame. It started with two Kenyan women and soon discovered that there were many other women in the villages around Nairobi, most of whom were single mothers, who were in great need of regular employment. Driven by the desire to provide such opportunities, Kazuri has grown and today they have a large work force skilled in the making of handmade jewelry. They have further applied their knowledge of ceramics and the artistic flair that has made their necklaces so attractive, in the design and production of their own unique range of pottery-ware, which reflects the culture and wildlife of Kenya. Each piece, like our beads, is hand made and hand painted in rich colors and our range is extensive from individual collector pieces to dinnerware.
